What Is the Eljen GSF?
The Eljen GSF is a passive advanced treatment system for onsite septic leach fields. Using a patented two-stage Bio-Matt™ pretreatment process, it delivers cleaner than secondary treated effluent to the soil. That higher level of treatment helps the soil absorb effluent more effectively, so the system can do more in a smaller area than a traditional leach field.
The Eljen GSF is tested and certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI Standard 40.
Benefits of the Eljen GSF System
-
NSF Standard 40 Certified
The GSF has been tested and certified by NSF, an independent third party, to NSF Standard 40.
-
Smaller Installation Area
The system treats and disperses wastewater in the same footprint and requires less space than traditional systems.
-
No Stone Required
GSF systems are built without drain rock, which simplifies installation and reduces material hauling.
-
Greater Long Term Performance
The modules handle most of the treatment work, protecting the native soil so it keeps absorbing effluent effectively over time.
-
Lower Site Impact
A smaller system means less excavation and less disturbance to landscaping, trees, and the surrounding property.
-
Lightweight and Easy to Install
GSF modules are light enough to move and place by hand, which helps keep installation efficient.
How the Eljen GSF System Works
The GSF system treats wastewater in two stages before it returns to the ground.
Primary Treatment: The GSF Modules
Effluent from the septic tank flows through a perforated pipe centered on top of each GSF module and into the corrugations of the module's core. As it moves through the Bio-Matt™ fabric, the effluent is filtered and treated by beneficial bacteria. The module's design creates far more treatment surface area than its footprint alone, and open air channels inside keep oxygen moving to support aerobic treatment. A protective fabric covers the top and sides of each module, keeping the sand and soil below from clogging while holding effluent within the module until it can be treated.
Secondary Treatment: The Sand Layer and Native Soil
Treated effluent drips into a layer of specified sand, which keeps flow unsaturated as it moves into the native soil. The sand also supports nitrification, which lowers the oxygen demand on the soil and helps prevent clogging. It protects the soil from compaction and preserves the natural cracks and channels that allow water to soak in, which is especially important in finer textured soils. The native soil provides final filtration and allows the clean water to recharge groundwater.

Installation Standards
Every Eljen GSF system must be installed according to Eljen's current installation instructions and local regulations. Modules are placed along their 4 foot length on a stabilized base of specified sand, with a 4 inch perforated pipe centered on top and secured with clamps. Eljen supplies the cover fabric, and substitutions are not allowed. Specified sand is then placed along the sides and ends of each row. System sizing and requirements vary by local agency, so check with your local environmental health department before designing a system.

Yes. The Eljen GSF (Geotextile Sand Filter) septic system is tested and certified by NSF, an independent third party, to NSF Standard 40. This certification confirms the system's wastewater treatment performance, making the Eljen GSF a trusted choice for homeowners, septic installers, and septic system designers.
-
No. Unlike a traditional gravel leach field, an Eljen GSF system is installed with a specified sand layer and does not require drain rock. Eliminating stone simplifies septic installation, reduces material hauling, and lowers the impact on your property during construction.
-
No. The Eljen GSF is a passive advanced treatment system, so it has no motors, blowers, or electrical components in the treatment process. Some septic systems may still require a pump tank depending on the site layout and elevation, which we can evaluate during your septic system design.
-
In many cases, yes. Because the Eljen GSF treats and disperses wastewater in a smaller footprint than a conventional leach field, it can often fit on properties where a traditional replacement leach field would not. It's a strong option for small lots, challenging soils, and septic repairs where space is limited.
